This is an advert that Oracle is placing in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday 10th September 2009. It has also hit many web sites, such as Yahoo Finance - Oracle page.
This might indicate that SUN SPARC and Solaris are not dead yet; however many big enterprises had already announced that they are phasing out SPARC/Solaris for the next version of there software packages.
IBM had unintentionally helped SUN and thus its future competitor: Oracle by buying: “Quick Transit” or “Transitive Corporation” which runs SPARC/Solaris binaries and applications including Oracle on Linux.
I have installed the Solaris version of Oracle 9 binaries for SPARC on RHEL 4.4 smoothly and as claimed, it worked even faster than Solaris on SPARC!
However, just one month after this, IMB acquired Transitive and stopped its production initially for 6 months. Then building it’s virtualization platform: PowerVM on it.
Now, PowerVM just helps you run Linux X86 apps on the Power Architecture of IBM, and that’s it!
Unless IBM releases this again for SPARC, it’d be doing good for SUN/Oracle.
Now let’s cross our fingers and watch if what proclaimed above will come true .
